For Labor Day Roger wanted to get in one last hike before the season was over. Looking through his handy dandy hiking book he decided on the Emerald Bay hike at Lake Tahoe. It was a beautiful location on the the west side of the lake, an area we had never been to. But once again, the holiday traffic was AWFUL and it took well over 2 hours to get there. We had of course left home later than we planned so everyone was hungry and getting grumpy by the time we got there, and then the parking lot was overflowing so we had to park a number of miles up along side the road.
It was a VERY scary walk down to the trail head! That part of the road had been built out as a bridge rather than cut out of the mountain. Therefore there was not ANY shoulder to walk along, so here we were all 6 of us, Roger all the way down to 4 yr old Luke, walking single file on the edge of the bridge with a road full of traffic. SO SCARY FOR ME AS MOM who was at the back of the line. Roger who was at the head of the line didn't have to watch as each car went by praying that Sam would stay close enough to the rail to keep from getting run over as I was hanging on to Luke's pack in front of me trying to keep him right up next to the railing.
But despite all of the hassle of getting there it was a beautiful location.

Sam and Luke at the very top getting ready to drop down into the trail.

It was a very steep grade going down to the bay. I got quite a workout that day and was pretty sore for a few days after!

Thankfully we had brought a few snacks. Luke was so hungry he ate his apple way past the normal core.

At the bottom of the trail there was a beautiful home that had been build in the early 1900's as a summer home for a wealthy women who had actually bought the Bay.

Roger and Madisyn hung out in it's shade while the 3 boys and I went down to the beach.

The beach was just right there. How amazing it would have been to have that place as a summer home! Jake and Sam are the 2 with the back packs. We thought that this hike was going to be more of a traditional mountain trail rather than a tourist destination.

Everyone had brought their swim suits, but Luke was the only one that had his in his pack. The rest for some reason were left in the car. I guess we were all so ready to get out of the car we forgot to check the packs.

Sam didn't let that stop him from getting in the water though. He just rolled his pants up and went on in.

Looking down into the bay from somewhere on the way back up the mountain.
